Sozopol
Sozopol is the oldest town of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Established as a Thracian settlement in 13th-12th century B.C., thanks to its strategic location Apolonia rapidly turned into a prosperous city-state. In 4th century, the city was called Sozopolis: the city of salvation. The underwater research in the region of the port of Sozopol has revealed the remains of dwellings, pottery, stone and bone tools dating back to the Bronze Age. In the bay of Sozopol many anchors and stocks were found dating back to the 2nd -1st century BC. The rich town became center of highly advanced art. The ancient icons and the magnificent wood-carved iconostasis are wonderful masterpieces of the arts and crafts of those days. Sozopol is also remarkable by its many churches and monasteries. The oldest church is the church of St. George, which was built in 1828 upon a large early Christian basilica with marble alter dating back to 330A.D.
Sozopol attracts a great number of Bulgarian and foreign tourists with its special charm.
The narrow and short cobblestone streets with old houses, wood decorations and oriels, vines, wine cellars, museums and fishing boats….An event of great interest each year is the Apollonia Arts Festival in the beginning of September.
